Project Description

Contemporary barn conversion – County Down

The concept behind the extension to connect the original cottage with an existing uninhabitable milking shed across the yard went beyond physical connections and buildings. The new challenge was to connect the past with the present and connect the client with his family home and land. The strikingly modern connection was proposed to contrast with the traditional farm vernacular buildings. Creating a tension between the old and new, the larch and slate clad extension explores and embraces its context, adding another chapter to the cluster of buildings, and extending the life that has settled in this unique site. A horizontal glazed linear element connects the existing stone buildings allowing glimpses of the sky and surrounding mature trees. Internally the layout and finsh are simple and functional, designed to suit the client`s needs and lifestyle. A central traditional hearth forms the heart of the house and allows modern family life to pivot around its warmth.
